After sawing the design out I use three planes to form the shape: a scrub plane, one hollow and one round. A hollow forms a round shape and a round forms a hollow shape. Hollows and Rounds as they're called are used to form all sizes and designs of mouldings. I literally have twenty three matching sizes of each, - one has to - from 1/8" to 2" wide. At left I'm using the scrub to take off material quickly, to roughly shape the round. At right you can see the 'hollow' forming the round radius, and the center view shows both. All of the mouldings that were made pre 1840ish with hand planes were not sanded, no need, it planes out like silk especially hardwoods; that applies to furniture and architectural parts including walls, doors, windows, floors, furniture - everything, interior and exterior in every house and public building throughout the 17th & 18th and into the 19th century!!!! So, the next Historic house you visit think about and appreciate that craftsmanship. >
