Carved crested banister back armchair from the Portsmouth, Nh. area, circa 1730. The original is at the Yale Art Gallery. 1980. The Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vt has a related armchair with Spanish feet. The profile of the arm on both is nearly the same, as is the crest size. The leg turnings are altogether different. Washington, Ct.
I've have subsequently built fourteen side chairs ( no originals exist ) - (I have recently found one in an old auction catalog to match this armchair ) and another eight with Spanish feet with nearly the same carved crest and different turnings ,but probably the same shop. Four in 1985, ten in 1995, and eight in 2009.
